Dylan-Baez Relationship – Part 1: Joan Baez

Bob Dylan and Joan Baez had a love-affair in the early 1960s. They first met in 1961 when Joan Baez already was a well-known singer, but Bob Dylan´s carreer had not yet started.
Joan Baez supported Bob Dylan by inviting him to join her tour in 1963, what made his popularity grow. Their relationship ended in 1965. They say Joan Baez felt disregarded when Bob Dylan made his tour trough England, without asking her to join him.

But was this reason enough to quit their relationship? Why didn´t it last any longer? Do their birth charts indicate that this was only to be a short-term-relationship?

Let´s take a quick look at Joan Baez´ birth chart.
Joan Baez was born on January 9th, in 1941, at 10:45 a.m. in New York.

Aries rising makes her energetic, strong-minded, determined and straight. Whatever she does, she does it passionate, enthusiastic and purposive (Mars in Sagittarius in the 8th house).
Jupiter conjunct Saturn in the first house connects some abilities like: wisdom and objectiveness, tolerance and liability, enthusiasm and sobriety, openness and persistency.
This two planets in her first house rule her 9th, 10th and 11th house. Therefore the concerns of the 9th house (philosophy of life, knowledge, the ability to gain deeper insight and to grow, religion and faith…), of the 10th house (society, establishment, rules, vocation and the aim of life…), as well as the 11th house (social conscience, getting involved with social problems, causing changes, clearing differencies…) are part of her very nature.
Taurus makes this skills constant and reliable – we know that Mrs. Baez´ political engagement, her advocacy for minorities and her campaigning against warfare is continuing to this day.

Joan´s Sun conjunct Mercury in Capricorn in the 10th house is unfolding her disposition in public. Once again we see a very tough woman, responsible, severe, intelligent and communicative.
The fact that Uranus is trining this conjunction makes her appearance outstanding and visionary. Joan Baez is both representing and demanding independence, liberty, tolerance and emancipation.

When we look at the 3rd house (language, self-portrayal, illustration, statements) we clearly see the difference to Bob Dylans lyrics. While Mr. Dylan has Pisces at the 3rd house cusp, making his songs poetic and cryptically, and himself silent and reticent, Mrs. Baez has Gemini there. On the contrary to Bob Dylan her statements are factual and objective. Her lyrics and her speech are communicative, definite and purposive (Mercury in Capricorn in the 10th house is the ruler of her 3rd house).

So we have seen that Joan Baez is a highly political person, she is a fighter for the rights of minoritites, for emancipation, she wants to help change the world with her music, while Bob Dylan never wanted to make any political statement troughout his career.

There is a big difference between both musicians, they have different reasons for singing their songs, they live different lifes.

The Times They Are A-Changing

As I´ve seen Bob Dylan live in concert this week, I want to take a look at his birth chart, too:

Bob Dylan was born the 24th of May, 1941 at 9:05 Uhr p.m. CST (3:05 UT) in Duluth, Minnesota as Robert Allen Zimmermann.

Sagittarius rising and a Gemini-Sun – this man has surely got a message!
Seven out of ten planets are located in only two signs: Taurus and Gemini.
No wonder that he is unflinching and persistant going his own way. So many planets in Taurus also make him constant, solid and hard-working: since 1964 he has released over 40 albums, since he started his so-called „Never Ending Tour“ in 1988 he used to play about 100 concerts each year all over the world.
The Sun, Venus and Mercury in Gemini garantee that he nevers runs out of words. Besides his many songs he has written poems, too. Many of his lyrics contain quotes from literature or the Bible. Some of his lyrics are regarded as high-standard works of literature, this case earned him the Pulitzer Prize as well as a nomination for the Nobel Prize for Literature.

During his career, that startet 46 years ago and is still lasting, Dylan has changed his music style for several times.
He used to perform solo, playing the acoustic guitar and singing folksongs, until he first started to play with a band, and using electric instruments in 1965. He released 3 albums in the years 1965 and 1966 that made him a rockstar.
In his Solar Arc Progression at this time Uranus (= electricity) had moved directly to his Descendant.
The end of this period marks his severe motocycle accident in July 1966.
In the Solar Return Chart of this year Auarius rising at 1° is announcing a sudden change in Dylan´s lifestyle, who until then was busy with concerts and a very high creative pruductivity. The Solar-Return-Sun in the 4th house shows his retreat into private life, caring about his family and his very own needs.

Between 1978 and 1981 Dylan released 3 albums that where inspired by his temporary turning to Christianity. Meanwhile transiting Pluto passed his Midheaven (transforming his public appearance) and transiting Neptune passed his Ascendant (the quest for meaning).
Religion and faith are important subjects for Sagittarian people. In a 1997 Newsweek interview Dylan tells us how he is dealing with his faith:

„Here's the thing with me and the religious thing. This is the flat-out truth: I find the religiosity and philosophy in the music.”

This quote describes with a few words the main constellation in Bob Dylan´s birth chart:
Neptune (music, inspiration) in the 9th house (religion, philosophy) trining the stellium of Saturn, Moon, Uranus and Jupiter in Taurus in his 5th house (creativity and self-expression).

This Taurus-crowd in the 5th house not only makes him pruductive in a creative way, Dylan is said to have up to 8 children.

Transiting Pluto on the way through Dylan´s 10th house during the 1980s caused sort of a crisis, marked by the release of some albums, condemned by critics and fans, chaotic performances and alcoholism.

As this Pluto stepped into Dylan´s 11th house (friends) in 1988 he joined George Harrison, Tom Petty, Roy Orbison and Jeff Lynne in a band called “Travelling Wilburys”. They released a well-selling album.
The same year Dylan started his “Never Ending Tour”.

In 1997 Dylan´s scheduled European Tour was cancelled due to a life-threatening heart infection, but Dylan recovered soon from it. In the Solar Return Chart of this year we see Leo rising (Leo = the heart), Pluto opposing the Sun in the 10th house. Neptune (infection) stands on the 6th house cusp (health), Uranus and Jupiter are in the 6th house as well.

Dylan´s private life is a mystery, he was married two times and has at least 4 children. He dislikes giving interviews, and even in his autobiography published in 2004 he tells very few things about his private life – it´s all about his music.

Bob Dylan has become a living myth, all his performances are documented accurately by his fans in the internet. As Dylan does not give any hints about the background and meaning of his lyrics, they are widely analyzed, interpreted and discussed, even books are written about them.

The person Bob Dylan is hardly comprehensible, his life is multisided and unsearchable – in the 2007 released biopic “I´m Not There” as many as 6 actors are performing the different lifes of Bob Dylan.

over 200 movies and TV series are listed with Dylan-Songs in their soundtracks. But Dylan not only works as a musician, he has also appeared as an actor, writer and director. Dylan is also a painter – for the first time 170 of his works have been shown in an exhibition in Chemnitz, Germany in 2007.

Dylan´s crowded 5th house is giving him an enormous creative potential. Neptune in his 9th house linked to it seems to pull the strings, both inspiring and concealing.

Die Zeiten ändern sich (The Times They Are A-Changing)

Da ich Bob Dylan also nun endlich live gesehen habe, möchte ich auch gerne einen Blick auf sein Geburtsradix werfen:

Bob Dylan wurde am 24.05.1941 um 21:05 Uhr CST (3:05 UT) in Duluth, Minnesota als Robert Allen Zimmermann geboren.

Ein Schütze-Aszendent mit Zwillingssonne – dieser Mann hat zweifellos eine „Message“.
Sieben von zehn Planeten drängen sich in den Zeichen Stier und Zwillinge.
Da mag es kaum verwundern, dass er unbeirrbar und hartnäckig seinen eigenen Weg verfolgt. Die Stier-Besetzung macht ihn aber auch beständig, zuverlässig und fleissig: seit 1962 hat er über 40 Alben veröffentlicht, seit 1988 befindet er sich auf einer ständigen Konzertreise, die „Never Ending Tour“ genannt wird, und spielt an die 100 Konzerte pro Jahr.
Die Zwilling-Besetzung sorgt dafür, daß seine Worte nie versiegen, so hat er neben den Songs auch Gedichte veröffentlicht. So hat er etwa 1965 begonnen, seine bisher solo und mit akustischer Gitarre vorgetragene Musik, elektrisch zu verstärken. 1965/66 veröffentlichte er drei Alben und vollzog damit seinen Wandel zum Rockstar.
In der Sonnenbogendirektion hatte zu diesem Zeitpunkt der Uranus (Elektrizität!) den Radix-DC erreicht.
Ebenfalls in diese Zeit fällt Dylan´s schwerer Motorradunfall im Juli 1966. Auch der Solar-AC des Jahres 1966 auf 1° Wassermann kündigt eine plötzliche Veränderung von Dylan´s bisherigem Lebenstil an, der von einem übervollen Terminkalender und einer enormen künstlerischen Produktivität geprägt war. Die Sonne im 4. Haus zeigt den Rückzug ins Privatleben an, in den Vordergrund tritt die Familie und seine eigenen Bedürfnisse.

Zwischen 1978 und 1981 hat Dylan 3 vom christlichen Glauben inspirierte Alben veröffentlicht. Während dieser vorübergehenden Hinwendung zum Christentum befanden sich der transitierende Pluto am Radix-MC und der transitierende Neptun am Radix-AC von Dylan!
Religion und Glaube sind wichtige Themen für einen Schütze-AC. In einem 1997 erschienen Newsweek-Interview schildert er seinem Umgang mit dem Glauben so:

"Here's the thing with me and the religious thing. This is the flat-out truth: I find the religiosity and philosophy in the music."

Dieses Zitat beschreibt in wenigen Worten die hervorspringende Konstellation in Dylan´s Horoskop: Neptun (Musik, Inspiration) im 9. Haus (Religion, Philosophie) der im Trigon verbunden ist mit dem Stellium von Saturn, Mond, Uranus und Jupiter in Stier im 5. Haus (kreatives Schaffen, aus sich selbst schöpfen, Lebensausdruck).

Die starke Stier-Besetzung im 5. Haus ist jedoch nicht nur in puncto Kreativität ein fruchtbarer Boden, so schwankt die kolportierte Anzahl von Dylans Kindern zwischen gesicherten vier bis möglicherweise acht.

In den 80er Jahren bescherte der transitierende Pluto Dylan auf dem Weg durch sein 10. Haus eine Krise die geprägt war von qualitativ sehr unterschiedlichen Alben, die teils negative Kritik ernteten, teilweise chaotischen Auftritten und einem Alkoholproblem.

Als der Pluto 1988 in Dylans 11. Haus wechselte, veröffentlichte er mit George Harrison, Tom Petty, Roy Orbison und Jeff Lynne unter dem Namen „Travelling Wilburys“ ein sehr erfolgreiches Album. 1988 war auch der Start seiner „Never Ending Tour“.

Im Jahr 1997 mußte Dylan seine geplante Europa-Tournee wegen einer lebensbedrohlichen Herzkrankheit (Perikarditis) absagen, konnte jedoch nach kurzer Zeit das Krankenhaus wieder verlassen. Im Solar diese Jahres sehen wir einen Löwe-AC (Löwe – das Herz), Sonne im 10. Haus mit Opposition Pluto. Neptun (Infektion) steht an der Spizte des 6. Solar-Hauses (Gesundheit), weiters im 6. Haus Uranus und Jupiter.

Über Dylans Privatleben ist wenig bekannt, zweimal war er verheiratet, er verweigert meist Interviews, auch in seiner 2004 veröffentlichten Autobiographie erzählt er kaum Privates – es geht ihm hauptsächlich um die Musik.

Bob Dylan hat sich zu einem Mythos entwickelt, alle seine Auftritte werden akribisch von Fans im Internet dokumentiert, seine beinahe schon fanatisch anmutende Fangemeinde begibt sich auf Spurensuche, seine Songtexte, über deren Hintergründe er selbst wenig bis nichts verrät, werden hinterfragt, untersucht, interpretiert und diskutiert, ja liefern sogar Stoff für Bücher.

Als Person ist Bob Dylan nicht fassbar, so vielseitig und doch so undurchsichtig ist er selbst und sein Leben – im 2007 erschienen Film über Dylans Leben „I´m Not There“ spielen 6 verschieden Schauspieler die Figur Dylan.

In der Internet Movie Database http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001168/ sind über 200 Filme und Fernsehserien aufgezählt, in deren Soundtracks Dylan-Songs vorkommen. Doch Dylan ist nicht nur Musiker, er ist auch bereits mehrfach als Schauspieler, Drehbuchautor und Regisseur in Erscheinung getreten. Außerdem wurden im Vorjahr weltweit erstmals 170 Aquarelle von Bob Dylan in einer Ausstellung in Chemnitz gezeigt.

Dylan´s vollgefülltes 5. Haus birgt ein enormes Kreativitätspotential – und der Neptun im 9. Haus zieht scheinbar die Fäden. Er inspiriert und verschleiert gleichermaßen.

There must be some way out of here…

Weit unter mir die unbeleuchtete Bühne. Im Halbdunkel kann man einige Gestalten erkennen, die sich zu ihren Instrumenten begeben. Als das Licht endlich angeht, stehen 5 graugewandete Musiker bei ihren Instrumenten und beginnen augenblicklich zu spielen. Der 6. Mann, in schwarz gekleidet, steht vor seinem Keyboard und tausende seiner Fans warten darauf, dass er einen seiner vielen großartigen Songs zum besten gibt.

Ein Mann, der für beinahe 50 Jahre Musikgeschichte steht, dessen Songs so oft gecovert wurden wie die keines anderen und der Musiker auf der ganzen Welt beeinflußt hat wie kein anderer.

Während des ganzen Konzertes richtet er nicht ein einziges Wort an sein Publikum, bewegt er sich kaum einen Meter von seinem Keyboard weg.
Zwei Stunden lang „bellt“ er in sein Mikrofon. Dann geht das Licht aus, die Band geht von der Bühne ab.
Nach einem etwa 10minütigen Dauerbeifall geht das Licht wieder an, die Band kommt zurück. Nach der ersten Zugabe stellt der Sänger nuschelnd seine Band vor und dann folgt auch schon der letzte Song. „All Along The Watchtower“ - eine seiner großartigsten Nummern, doch beinahe bis zu Unkenntlichkeit verfremdet und in das Klangschema eingepresst, das sich durch den ganzen Abend gezogen hat.

Ein wenig enttäuscht verlasse ich die Konzerthalle, irgendwie hatte ich mir etwas anderes erhofft. Nun bin ich ja kein eingefleischter Bob Dylan Fan, aber einige seiner Songs gehören auf jeden Fall zu meinen All-Time-Favourites und Bob Dylan ist einer jener Künstler, die man auf jeden Fall einmal im Leben live gesehen haben muss. Und mit ein wenig Recherche im Vorfeld hätte ich mir die Enttäuschung erspart und das Konzert mit anderen Augen gesehen.

Ich bin wohl einer der Nostalgiker, wie sie Bernd Flieher in seinem tollen Artikel in den Salzburger Nachrichten nennt. Der kam für mich leider einen Tag zu spät, ich hatte das Konzert am 10. Juni in der Wiener Stadthalle besucht.

Bob Dylan hat während seiner gesamten Karriere immer wieder die Erwartungshaltung seiner Fans durchkreuzt, sei es mit seinem Wandel vom Folksänger zum Rockmusiker, mit seiner kurzzeitigen Hinwendung zum Christentum und den dadurch inspirierten Alben, oder dadurch, daß er seine altbekannten Songs immer wieder in einem völlig neuen musikalischen Gewand darbietet, diese aber dadurch oftmals völlig unkenntlich macht.
Immer wieder sah er sich harscher Kritik ausgesetzt. Doch immer wieder hat er sich durchgesetzt und seine eigenen Vorstellungen verwirklicht. Und nicht zuletzt damit auch anderen Künstlern den Weg geebnet.
