Yesterday was „Towel Day“, the commemoration day for science-fiction-author Douglas Adams, whose fans carry along a towel every 25th of May. The reason therefore is, Adams was mentioning a towel in his novel “The Hitchhiker´s Guide to the Galaxy”, saying that it is one of the most useful things when travelling (through the universe).
So, what have a beer from Styria and a park in Innsbruck (both Austria) got to do with the universe?
Douglas Adams tells us how he came across the titel for his bestselling novel “The Hitchhiker´s Guide to the Galaxy”: „The idea for the title first cropped up, while I was lying drunk in a field in Innsbruck, Austria, in 1971. Not particulary drunk, just the sort of drunk you get when you have a couple of stiff Gössers after not having eaten for two days straight.“

This story is just as absurd and funny as his novels.
What about Mr. Adams´ birth chart?
Douglas Adams was born the 11th of March 1952, at 11:10 a.m. in Cambridge, UK.
Douglas Adams´ stories, above all the „Hitchhikers-Series“, are characterized by a sarcastic, satiric writing-style. His novels are mostly set in absurd, strange worlds, which, however, in many ways (bureaucracy, enviousness, economic systems) resemble our real earthy living. Adams often pulls together utopistic, extrasensory incidents with trivial everyday occurences. Without doubt we see Uranus working here (science-fiction, sarcasm, satire, absurd, strange and utopistic scenes), as well as his Virgo-Moon (“real life”, trivial, everyday scenes).
The Uranian dominance in Adams´ chart is a central theme in his entire life. Not only was he a science-fiction-author, but also belonged to the group around the british comedians “Monty Python´s”. Adams was a serious fan of technology, he has bought one of the first Apple Macintosh´s in the UK and he was writing about using e-mails and usenet at a time this things were not yet widely known. Forthermore he was involved in developing some computer games.
Adams was also an environmental activist, campaigning on behalf of some endangered species. In 1990 he wrote a non-fictional book called “Last Chance to See”, which is a report about his trips to some of these endangered species. Toward the end of his life he was a sought-after lecturer on topics including technology and the environment (Uranus in Cancer).
Adams called himself a „radical atheist“ – but one who has spent much time thinking about religion – Uranus as the ruler of the 9th house (religion) and Jupiter opposing Neptune.
Douglas Adams´ Pisces-Sun made him sensitive for the background of life as well as for the needs of our planet.
He died, 49 years old, on the 11th of May 2001 in Santa Barbara, California, of a heart attack.
